MULBARTON V TAVERHAM
After a very long build up, the first game of the season arrived with us travelling to Mulbarton. It was a warm and sunny day, although windy.
Our line up looked strong, and straight from the kick off we took control. Stevie and Brad were working well down both wings, and put in some good crosses which were well defended. At the other end, we looked a little shaky with high balls, but Dom and Freddy were soon in control. Brad did well and crossed for Stevie to fire in our first goal of the season. We continued our good play, with Danny dominating in the middle of the park. On the 20 minute mark, Stevie latched on to a lovely through ball from Danny, and finished superbly for his and our second goal. Soon after, Jack G got on the end of a ball from Luke, calmly rounded the keeper, and rolled the ball into the empty net to make it 3. Half time:- 0-3.
We kept things as they were for the start of the second half. Danny was continuing to dominate, and Dom was now attacking the ball well. We limited them to one shot, which Oliver saved well, however we had nor more goals to show for our dominance. Reuben hit the bar, as had Jack G and Stevie in the first half, and their keeper was playing well. Will replaced Jack G, who was struggling with illness. Reuben went up front, with Stevie dropping in behind him, and Will going wide right. Will got in the game straight away, beating his full back and crossing will. Time and again we got behind their defence, but failed to score. Finally Reuben made the breakthrough, with a lovely lob from just outside the area. Almost immediately, after coming on to replace Luke, James followed up in the area to slot home, making it 5 nil. Will continued to impress, twice rounding the keeper, but being denied a goal. Ben replaced Freddy, going to full back, with Sam going into the centre with Dom. We were totally in control, and were playing some great football. Danny scored a super goal from 25 yards, and Stevie finished the scoring with a good header to complete his hat-trick. Final score:- 0-7.
Man of the Match:- Danny Holmes.
Dereham v Taverham – 20th September 2009
It was another warm September morning, for our away fixture against Dereham. Other commitments meant only 11 boys were available, so we had no subs.
Before the game we talked about getting into them from the first whistle, and straight from kick off the boys got into their stride. The defence were commanding and determined, and Danny and Stevie were running things in midfield. With Jack and Reuben both looking sharp up front, it was only a matter of time before we took the lead. From an excellent flowing move, Jack went clear of the defence and made it 1-0 with his left foot. Almost immediately, a great Reuben flick from a long kick by Oliver put Jack clear again, but this time he rushed his shot and the keeper saved. As was to be expected, Dereham retaliated, and Oliver tipped the ball onto the post from their first foray into our half. They looked threatening down the left, but we were defending well and not giving them an inch. They did put the ball in the back of the net, but it was disallowed for offside. Will and Jack were sending in some dangerous balls which Dereham were struggling to deal with. As half time approached, it seemed only a matter of time before we scored again, but it wasn’t to be. Half time:- 0-1.
At the start of the second half, Will was finding more space out wide. Dom and Freddy continued to dominate along with Sam and Ben. From a well worked move between Danny and Stevie, Jack raced clear, but hit his shot straight at the keeper, earning a corner. We failed to get on the end of a great ball in. We were making lots of chances, but not capitalising on them, and there was always the danger that Dereham would get back into the game. Oliver made a good one on one save, and Dereham had a good 10 minute spell without creating much. Danny and Brad were suffering with injuries, but with no subs had to struggle on. A brilliant back heel from Reuben saw Jack in the middle of the goal, just 10 yards out. Amazingly, he blasted over the bar when it seemed easier to score. Stevie then went on a great run, but was fouled on the edge of the box. Another great ball in saw a superb opportunity wasted. Just when we thought it was going to be one of those days, Reuben scored when the stand in keeper made an error, two nil and totally deserved. We continued to dominate and create chances, but were unable to score again. At the other end we defended superbly on the rare occasions they threatened, and restricted them to long shots. Right on time their winger got free, but Oliver stood tall and parried away well. Final score:- 0-2.
Man of the Match:- Sam Jenkins.
Norman v Taverham - 27th September 2009
An afternoon visit to Sloughbottom Park saw us take on newly promoted Norman. It was a very warm day, and the pitch was bone hard and crusty.
We went on the attack straight from the kick-off, Jack G failing to convert a good cross from Will. Danny & Charlie were dominating in the middle, and Brad was looking dangerous down the left. At the back, Dom & Sam were looking comfortable, and along with Mark were tackling well and getting forward at every opportunity. An early shot from Jack G was saved well by the Norman keeper, and an angled short from Danny flew just too high. We were totally in control, but lacking a goal to add to our excellent build up play. Ben was playing some nice balls into the front boys, and Reuben & Jack G were really putting their defence under pressure. Charlie put in a couple of great corners, but no-one was able to get on the end of them. Finally, Danny put Jack G through, and this time he raced clear to slot home our first goal. Dom had to leave the field with a back injury, and Tom took his place in the centre of the defence. From a long Tom ball, Jack G did well to outmuscle his opponent, and crossed for Will who nearly scored. Charlie set Brad away down the left, and his cross was nearly turned in by Jack G. From another excellent Charlie corner, Reuben attacked the ball which was saved onto the post, but luckily Brad was following up well to score. Almost immediately, Danny flicked on a Ben throw in to Jack G, who turned his defender and scored from an angle. Half time:- 0-3.
The second half kicked off and we again regained control. Sam & Tom were winning headers and covering each other well, while Mark was having a great game. Danny & Charlie again forced the pace, and Jack G only just failed to score from an angle after rounding the keeper. He then went clear again, this time the keeper saving well with his feet. Norman then had a good 5 minute spell, when they had good possession without creating much. We continued to look dangerous every time we went forward, but we were not managing to convert the numerous chances created. Jack L replaced Will on the right, and with his first touch battled to steer the ball into the corner of the net for 4 nil. We were on the offensive, and were looking fit and strong against tiring opponents. Mark played 2 superb balls to Brad, but his first cross was too close to the keeper, and the second was saved well. Jack L thundered a header into the back of the net to make it 5, and Danny was unlucky with a header from another corner. Jack G was then sent away down the right by Reuben, and he cut in and smacked his shot in off the far post for 6-0. As full time approached, he then converted to make it 7, following good play from Reuben & Brad. Final Score:- 0-7.
Man of the Match:- Jack Garwood.
